About

I'm a PhD Student working on an ESRC CASE project with the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester. My PhD is on gas turbine development at Metropolitan-Vickers in Manchester, c.1935-1965; in preparation for this, my Masters thesis was on engine development at the RAE Farnborough from the First World War through to the Second World War.

If you've found me via google, hello! Judging by the search keywords that lead to this page, there is still interest in the 2009-10 University Challenge series; I am indeed the Jakob Whitfield that led the Manchester team to the semi-finals, along with my brilliant team-mates Tom Whyman, Rachael Neiman, and Nick Daunt.
