About
Joshua Kirby is a doctoral student in the School of Languages, Linguistics and Cultures at The University of Manchester. His main research interests are in eighteenth-century French society, culture, history, literature and philosophy. Particularly interested in the works of Denis Diderot, his thesis concentrates on the representation of Eastern and Western civilisations in the Encyclopédie (1751-1780), and the ambiguous attitude displayed towards the ideas of the seventeenth-century Natural Law school.
