Faculty Member, Centre for Social Ethics and Policy
Lecturer in Bioethics
About
I am a Lecturer in Bioethics at the Centre for Social Ethics and Policy and the Institute for Science, Ethics, and Innovation in the School of Law. Prior to taking up the lectureship I worked as a Research Fellow in Bioethics and Law. In a previous life I was a medical doctor where I worked in General Medicine and A&E. I have also worked as a Screening Physician for a phase I clinical trials company.
I qualified from the Manchester/St. Andrews medical course in 2003. I completed an Intercalated BSc in Health Care Ethics and Law in 2002 with first class honours, and in 2006 finished a Masters in this area receiving a distinction. I also recently completed a PhD at Manchester.
My main teaching is Philosophical Bioethics which is the core philosophy module for our MA programmes (campus-based and distance learning). This module aims to provide students with a firm grounding in moral philosophical theory as it relates to bioethical themes, and introduce them to the debates surrounding major contemporary issues in bioethics. This year I am also lecturing on the Medicine, Morals, Technology, and the Law module on the LLB.
My research interests include the ethics of reproduction and the reproductive technologies, organ transplantation, property in human biomaterials, rights, and the ethics of using nudges in the health context.
I am currently the vice-chair of the North-West e-Health governance committee. NWeH uses its unique e-Lab platform technology to offer tools and expertise that directly support local healthcare and generate new healthcare knowledge. I am also a member of the Wellcome Trust's Ethics and Society Interview Committee and have recently been appointed to the UK Donation Ethics Committee.
