About
Stuart has a doctorate from the University of Manchester. His research focused on the music and artistic patronage of pope Alexander VI (1492-1503). He utilised the areas of art and architectural history with musicology in order to provide an interdisciplinary study that supplies a cultural context through which to understand the music culture of the papal court. This has led him to cover diverse subjects as the music of the papal chapel and the fresco decoration of the papal apartments.
Prior to his doctorate, Stuart completed a MusM at Manchester, with a thesis on the portrayal and iconography of gender and music in Italian renaissance literature, with a specific focus on the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili.
He has presented papers to postgraduate forums and interdisciplinary colloquia that have dealt with musicology, gender, musical iconography and urban musicology. While at Manchester, he was involved in the teaching of courses including Music Bibliography, History of Western Music and Dissertation Special Subject and modules for the Postgraduate Skills Training Framework. Stuart holds a wider interests in art, bibliographic studies and research skills training, gender, sexuality and teaching methodologies for students with specific learning disabilities.
